Holy CRAP can you ever make your ship and captain OP I mean, a heal for your ship hull that's based on your outgoing DPS? On an escort? Hoo boy. Plus the reputation system and all the perks. The R+D system is new to me, and over the last 2 weeks I've used it to unfuck all my ground gear. I've been working on intel and pilot specialties, so it gets even worse If I pop maneuver alpha and rate of fire, I can blap a fucking BATTLESHIP. I had no idea just how nasty a good escort could be. Engine power, weapon power, big guns, and RCS modules. My benefactor asked, and I said I like maneuver, so I'm basically a full glass cannon. As a result, I can now basically do ALL the space content by murdering the fuck out of everything within the forwardmost 45 degrees of my ship. My fleet strike wing escort is now a fucking avatar of antiproton murder. I now have T15 gear that ranges from purple to orange on my ship because someone decided gearing up the returning player was a good idea.
On what was literally my second day back, I made a throwaway comment about "mmmyeah, I'm clueless and underequipped" in a conversation in zone chat.
OK, as a Tac captain in a strike wing escort, I could somewhat DPS space problems, kinda. However, this put me in the position where my gear was not up to my level. I managed to level to 65 pretty goddamn fast. I think that was max last time I logged in. I logged on about 2 weeks ago on a toon that was level 50. Let me preface this by saying I have no idea what I'm doing. But probably I'm just not the right customer. It's like this game wants to be P2W, but it can't even do that right. There are a few char/account purchases that are reasonable value - account bank, doff slots, maybe inventory, but after that nothing that really makes you want to buy it in that $5-$20 range that is my sweet spot for F2P purchases. I don't get the motivation for buying in that way when the odds are such an impossible hill and there's no reward along the way, it's like buying plastic easter eggs with nothing inside. I've opened about 15 boxes by now, mostly on free or bundled keys, and there's been absolutely nothing useful in them other than the spare lobi change. This bundle is worse than most - I can't actually see anything I want at all in it, and at that cost you'd have to be either crazy or wealthy to even consider it. Almost everything other than straight up ship purchasing seems to be targeted at whales (and I still say a lot of that is overpriced). The STO forum posts on the bundle are the usual mess of crazy.Īs a casual player, I will say that the monetization plan for this game drives me nuts.
